Let's hear it for the boy!

Today I want to talk about the man in my life.
No, I am not writing about my devoted husband, James.
I am talking about my charming baby boy.  His name is Jack and he does not get nearly the attention he deserves in this blog.  I am going to make amends for that today.

Where do I begin?  Jack is our hat-trick baby.  He's number 3 in my brood and he often gets left out because he's the "baby".  This fall, since big sisters are at school, the boy is starting to get some much needed one-on-one time with his mama.  It's a new world for the boy.  He was born into noise.  From day one of his life (and this means his time spent in my womb too) he has lived with constant acoustic commotion.  There's laughing, singing, yelling, chatting, crying...all delivered above any safe decibel rating to his little ears.  Big sisters=big noise.  That's life around here.  But when those sisters dearest are at school, our home is blessedly still and quiet.  It made me uncomfortable at first.  Now we're getting used to it.

Jack has free reign over the house during those 3 short hours that Sydney is in kindergarten.  He likes to start his day with an independent play in his jammies (after bus stop) and a strong cup of coffee.  What?  Just kidding.  Jack plays really well alone and lets his mom drink her coffee and check e-mail and Facebook.  It's nice.

Some mornings we do chores.  Other days we go out.  He loves to sit in the front of the grocery cart and point at all produce he sees.  Costco is even better because when there he gets to flirt with the sample ladies and score us both extra treats!  We've started a toddler time at the library once a week and that is new adventure too.  Today was an exceptionally beautiful day here, so I skipped the laundry and kitchen clean-up and pulled Jack in his wagon off to the park for a play.  I had ulterior motives with this adventure though because I wanted to get pictures of him playing in the leaves.  We have no leaves in our yard, so we have to "borrow" this experience from somewhere else.  I think he enjoyed his play date with me this morning.  Most of my photos did not turn out very well.  He spent a great deal of time running away from me.  I got lots of blurry captures of his backside.  Photographing toddlers is not easy!  It was a fun little outing for us.

I am really enjoying this time with my "baby".  I'm also learning a lot about what it's like to parent a boy.  He is different from his sisters is so many ways.  He likes to "zoom" trucks around.  He enjoys throwing things.  All sorts of things.  He climbs.  He runs.  There is a certain physicality to his play that his sisters did not really exhibit as much.  He keeps me running and I'm learning that I have to watch him like a hawk (lest I should find him in some very precarious situation that he cannot get out of without hurting himself).  Jack is also very loving and affectionate.  He smiles all of the time and laughs freely at almost any silly thing I do.  I love him to bits and am so glad he's mine!

So today I celebrate you, Jack!  Let's hear it for the boy!
